Dear Members & Friends of the Chamber
We hope you had a very Happy New Year and hope you got to spend time with your loved ones over the Winter Break.
In this edition we focus on 2025 outlooks from some of our Charter member banks including articles from: RBC, BMO, TD Bank, Scotiabank and CIBC. As they mention the path forward in 2025 is uncharacteristically uncertain for Canada with ‘policy uncertainty from the incoming US administration, geopolitical schisms, and the looming Canadian federal election. There are new headwinds from lower immigration targets, and old ones from unaffordability and low productivity growth. Multiple risks mean a wide range of economic outcomes will need to be considered amid a challenging backdrop for Canada’ (RBC).
As the global economy appears to be entering a new era of protectionism we know that many companies in the UK including our members are also now grappling with looming tax increases, putting a strain on their financial resources and affecting planned investment and growth as found by the British Chambers of Commerce in their most recent Quarterly Economic Survey Q4.
In challenging times we believe businesses are stronger together, and can achieve more through collaboration and shared commercial and professional experiences. The bilateral relationship between Canada and the UK remains as strong as ever. We have just completed the 2nd edition of our Success Stories series featuring 10 more Canadian & UK organisations that are having a positive impact bilaterally. In the words of H.E. Ralph Goodale, Canada’s High Commissioner to the UK: ‘An extensive list of successes to be highlighted is to be expected in a bilateral economic relationship as impressive as the one our two countries share. The value of that relationship is now estimated at some CAD$480 billion... Organizations across a wide range of industries – such as Babcock International Group (a global defence, aerospace and security company), Lynn & Liana Designs (a family SME producing hand-crafted serve ware), and VIDO (a University of Saskatchewan-based organization that is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals) – have found success by engaging in both the Canadian and British marketplace.
