Dear Members & Friends of the Chamber
The Canada Investment Summit is underway in Toronto this week, bringing together global investors, business leaders and policymakers as Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to catalyse up to $1 trillion in investment into Canada over the next five years. The summit reflects Canada's broader efforts to diversify its trading relationships, attract international capital and strengthen its position in an evolving global economy. The PM has confirmed Canada wishes a closer partnership with the EU, as detailed by CBC News, but ‘he explicitly ruled out full membership or formal associate status’ whilst instead initiating talks for a ‘unique alliance’.
Against this backdrop, the recent entry into force of the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) marks an important milestone in Canada-UK economic relations. With the agreement now fully in force between both countries, UK businesses have access to all CPTPP markets, representing a trading bloc worth nearly £13tn in combined GDP. The agreement creates new opportunities for trade, investment, business mobility and procurement, while opening doors to new customers and markets on both sides of the Atlantic. Read more here.
In this edition our focus is on International Trade, and the opportunities emerging from this new chapter in the Canada-UK relationship. From digital trade and business mobility to practical guidance for exporters, our featured articles explore what CPTPP means for businesses and how firms can take advantage of the agreement's new opportunities. As always, we remain committed to helping companies build connections, explore new markets and strengthen commercial ties between Canada and the UK.
